Complex Scientific Expedition with Rosneft Specialists Departs for the Arctic

03 August 2022

On August 3, a joint expedition by specialists from Rosneft’s Arctic Research Centre and Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M.V. Lomonosov took off from Dixon to the islands of the Franz Josef Land archipelago on the Mikhail Somov vessel.

The expedition will include a comprehensive study of geological outcrops focusing on natural bitumen, the first such study to be carried out on the Franz Josef Land archipelago in 25 years.

In addition to geological tasks, the expedition, together with scientists from the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences, is also planning expedition research on walruses to assess the current status and dynamics of the Atlantic population. This is the third expedition season in the area, which will be carried out as part of the corporate biodiversity conservation programme under an agreement with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation.

Alongside the scientific and environmental aspects, the expedition includes the Arctic Floating University educational programme, which aims to provide participants with basic comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge of the Arctic region in an expedition environment in the high-latitude Arctic.

Note for Editors:

Rosneft’s Arctic Research Centre implements a comprehensive long-term scientific programme to explore the Arctic shelf, including geological, hydrometeorological and environmental areas. Within the geological block, the northernmost shallow wells in the history of Russian offshore development were drilled in 2020 in the northern Kara Sea; in 2021, wells were drilled for the first time in the Eastern Arctic in the Laptev Sea. Geological landings on Arctic islands provide a significant supplement to the information obtained on the geological structure of the Arctic region.
